Session replay without the vanity cut
Replay tools are excellent at producing a montage of confused cursors. They are also excellent at letting a product team collect only the clips that flatter last week’s release. The studio rule is simpler: you do not get to pick the highlight.
In drop-off archaeology we sample recordings by step, not by “interestingness.” If the leak is OTP, you watch ten OTP failures before you watch a successful checkout. If the leak is an address form on a QSR app, you watch the keyboard covering the submit button on a small Android, even when the desktop-styled preview looked fine in Figma.
Vanity cuts usually hide timeouts. A shopper who stares at a spinner for eight seconds and leaves does not look dramatic on 2× speed. Teams skip those clips because they feel uneventful. They are the event. Mobile Funnel Analytics treats duration as a first-class signal; a replay that is scrubbed of waiting is just theatre.
Privacy still matters. Classroom datasets are anonymised. On your own stack, mask fields before anyone from Switch Nodehub looks, and do not send us recordings of real ID cards or card numbers. We will refuse the file. That is both ethics and the Privacy posture of the studio.
If your weekly review currently opens with a funny cursor montage, replace it once with a silent timer montage. The room will be less entertaining. The map will improve. The Observatory page is where we define the rest of the reading practice; replay is only one instrument.
